Oranges are widely available throughout the year and make a fantastic easy to eat on the go snack. There are also many health benefits of oranges that might surprise you. Oranges originate from Southeast Asia, northern India and China; oranges were cultivated as far back as 2500BC. So there is a brief history on oranges, now let’s take a look at some of those health benefits.


Protecting against cancer, oranges are packed full of citrus limuloids, these have been proven to help fight against many different types of cancer such as; lung, breast, skin, colon and stomach cancer.

Kidney disease, orange juice can do wonders for the kidneys. Drinking just one glass of orange juice on a regular basis can help prevent kidney stones and kidney disease. Remember to drink orange juice in moderation as fruit has very high sugar content.

Heart health, oranges are very high in soluble fibre, this is great for lowering bad cholesterol a leading cause of cardiovascular disease. Oranges are also very rich in potassium; this electrolyte mineral helps the heart to function correctly. When the potassium levels get low in the body it can cause arrhythmia. (Abnormal heart beat).  Oranges contain a high amount of vitamin C which helps to protect against damaging free radicals, which can lead to heart disease and cancer.

Relieve constipation, oranges are packed full of great dietary fibre, this helps stimulate the digestive system which in turn ensures regular bowel movement and can ease the symptoms of constipation.

Eye health, oranges are packed full of compounds known as carotenoid, these get converted into vitamin A, which can help protect against macular degeneration and cataracts.

Regulating high blood pressure, oranges also pack the flavonoid know as hesperidin, this helps to regulate the blood pressure along with the magnesium in oranges helping to maintain the bodies blood pressure.

Protect the skin, it’s amazing that oranges can have so many health benefits, but, we are not done yet. Oranges also contain beta-carotene; this powerful antioxidant protects the body’s cells from damage. This antioxidant can also benefit the skin and protects it from free radicals as well as preventing against signs of aging.

  1. I love oranges- they are my favourite fruit. When you talk about oranges here do you mean all variations of oranges such as tangarines, satsumas, mandarins? I love them and my kids love them but recently the dentist said that they were bad for our teeth- is this true? is there anything I can do to prevent damage to the teeth?

      Hi Paula, thank you for your comment it is true that that acidity in fruit can be bad for our tooth enamel. however, regular brushing of teeth is essential in preventing the effects that the acids in fruit can have on teeth.
